Two New Strains for 2026 Flu Vaccines
The Australian Influenza Vaccine Committee (AIVC) has recommended two new strains for the 2026 influenza vaccines, signaling important changes from this year's southern hemisphere and 2025/26 northern hemisphere formulations.
Announced ahead of the upcoming flu season, the recommendations reflect global surveillance data showing how the influenza virus continues to evolve. "These updates are critical to ensure vaccines remain effective against circulating strains," said Dr. Eleanor Carter, AIVC chairperson. "We're seeing subtle but significant mutations that could impact this season's protection."
The committee's decision comes after reviewing data from laboratories across the Asia-Pacific region and North America. Health officials emphasize that while annual vaccine updates are routine, this year's adjustments target specific mutations detected in recent months.
"For vulnerable populations - the elderly, young children, and those with chronic conditions - these refinements could make a real difference in preventing severe outcomes," explains Professor Michael Chen, infectious disease specialist at Melbourne University.
Manufacturers will now begin producing updated vaccine formulations, with doses expected to reach clinics by early 2026. Public health campaigns reminding Australians about annual vaccination typically begin in March ahead of the peak winter flu season.
