A Dutch volleyball player, who was convicted in 2016 of raping an underage girl, has been denied a visa to Australia for next month's Beach Volleyball World Championships, according to the Dutch volleyball federation.

The Dutch federation confirmed the visa denial in a statement, with technical director Heleen Crielaard expressing regret but accepting the decision. "Unfortunately, we have now been informed that the decision has been made not to grant the visa. We regret this, but we have no choice but to accept the decision," Crielaard said.

The player, identified as Van de Velde, was included in the Dutch team for the world championships. The denial comes as the team was preparing for the event scheduled to take place in Australia next month.

The visa denial highlights the strict immigration policies that Australia, and many other countries, enforce for individuals with criminal records, especially those involving sexual offenses against minors. This case also raises questions about the ethical considerations in permitting individuals with such convictions to participate in international sporting events.

The Dutch team will now have to adjust their lineup for the upcoming world championships without Van de Velde.
