Greazy Dogs Gang Members Fined for Illegal Facebook Raffle

Court gavel representing legal proceedings

Two patched members of the Greazy Dogs MC gang have been fined after running an illegal Facebook raffle in Mount Maunganui, which they claimed was intended to raise funds for a community trip for local children.

In a hearing at Tauranga District Court, the gang members admitted to organizing the unauthorized raffle that promised substantial cash prizes to participants. According to an affidavit presented by Walker, one of the members, the stated purpose was to raise $18,000 to take approximately 200 "tamariki" (children) from his community on a trip.

The raffle, promoted via Facebook, advertised attractive cash prizes including four awards of $1,000, five of $500, ten of $250, and five of $200. However, the operation violated New Zealand's gambling regulations, which require proper licensing and authorization for such fundraising activities.

The case highlights the strict regulations surrounding raffles and gambling activities in New Zealand, even when conducted for seemingly charitable purposes. The Greazy Dogs members now face financial penalties as a consequence of their unauthorized fundraising attempt.

While community initiatives for children's activities are generally encouraged, authorities emphasize the importance of following proper legal channels when organizing such events to ensure transparency and compliance with the law.
