Medical Misadventure Verdict Returned in Cavan Baby Inquest
A verdict of medical misadventure has been returned at the inquest into the death of a 12-month-old child who died while in the care of Cavan General Hospital over two years ago.
Delivering the verdict, coroner for Co Cavan Dr Mary Flanagan expressed deep sorrow for the family's loss during the emotional hearing at Cavan courthouse. The inquest examined the circumstances surrounding the tragic event that occurred in October 2023.
Family members who had waited over two years for answers attended the proceedings. Their legal representative explained that while no criminal liability was found, the medical misadventure verdict indicates the death resulted from an error or omission in the child's care.
Dr Flanagan formally extended condolences to the grieving parents, stating: "It is with a heavy heart that I return this verdict. The loss of a child is an unimaginable tragedy, and my thoughts remain with the family during this impossibly difficult time."
Hospital officials expressed regret over the incident and committed to reviewing protocols to prevent similar occurrences. The case has highlighted ongoing concerns about pediatric care standards in Ireland's hospital system.
